The service also supports archiving, which securely stores all your inbound and outbound email in the Sensical.net cloud. The archive allows you to retrieve deleted emails as well as meet regulatory compliance standards relating to data storage.

How does it work for inbound email?
- Customer points their Mail Exchange (MX) DNS records to Sensical.net.
- Inbound email is directed from the Internet to Sensical.net where it is scanned.
- Sensical.net Mail Scanner detects 99% of spam, bad content and viruses using advanced fingerprint technology and heuristics.
- Non-spam email is routed to the customer's mail server(s).
- Spam email and viruses are routed according to the customer's preferred configuration - e.g. to quarantine.
- End users manage approved and blocked sender lists via Sensical.net Mail Scanner web-based control panel.
- Customer administrators configure service, view reports, manage users and approved and blocked sender lists via Sensical.net Mail Scanner web-based control panel.
How does it work for outbound email?
- Customer sets up their mail server(s) to use Sensical.net as their "smart host" or "relay server".
- Outbound email is directed from the customer's mail server(s) to Sensical.net.
- Sensical.net Mail Scanner detects 99% of viruses using advanced fingerprint technology and heuristics.
- Viruses are removed and virus-free email is routed to the correct destination via the Internet.
- Customer administrators configure service and view reports via Sensical.net Mail Scanner web-based control panel.

- Web-based Control Panel: Allows the customer administrators to view and edit all configuration settings, view performance reporting and message storage, perform quarantine release activities and perform user management. The control panel dashboard shows an instant graphical representation of the recent volume and content of incoming and outgoing email.
- Access Control: Permission for different tasks, for example from configuration through quarantine control to editing of user-specific block lists, can be granted to different users or sub-level administrators.
- Redundant inbound SMTP connectivity: The incoming mail service is available over the public Internet via SMTP protocol via multiple redundant SMTP servers which are designed to be referenced in the customers' domains' MX records. Also the Sensical.net Mail Scanner supports delivery of incoming email to multiple redundant customer mail servers via SMTP.
- Inbound queuing with server protection downtime: If the customers' mail servers are not available then the Sensical.net Mail Scanner will store incoming email for five days before returned it to sender.
- Redundant outbound SMTP connectivity: The outbound mail service is available over the public Internet via plain SMTP protocol via multiple redundant SMTP servers which are designed to be referenced in the customer's mail servers' "relay" or "smart" host.
- Secure connectivity: Inbound and outbound email connections from the customer's mail server(s) can be secured using SMTP/SSL or SMTP with STARTTLS.
- Large message size: Maximum email size of 20 megabytes (MB).
- Inbound quarantine: Inbound viruses or email with a spam score between configurable limits can be stored in quarantine. The customer administrator can then release the inbound email from quarantine via the web-based control panel. Also the customer administrator can configure a customisable warning email to be sent to the end user to inform them of the quarantine.
- Inbound email header modification: Insert headers into email delivered to the customer's mail server; allowing the customer to determine email destiny based on the results of the Sensical.net Mail Scanner. (Headers can be added to inbound email with a spam score between configurable limits.)
- Inbound email subject modification: Add a prefix to the email subject, allowing you to warn the end user of potential spam. (A customisable subject prefix can be applied to inbound email with a spam score between configurable limits.)
- Defang Spam: Spam email "defanged" - i.e. attached to a plain email, allowing your end users to be protected from accidentally opening potential spam. (Defanging can be applied to inbound email with a spam score between configurable limits.)
- White and Black List (Approved and Block Sender Lists): Customer-wide or user-specific white and black lists can be created to ensure that certain senders' emails are always blocked or are always guaranteed to be delivered. These lists can be configured by the customer administer and also by individual end-users if permitted by the customer administrator.
- Performance Reporting: Filterable performance reports are available in tabular and graphical format over a customisable time-period via the web-based control panel. The reports can show many metrics including message volumes, spam volumes, user volumes, quarantine performance etc.
- Message Storage: Records of the headers of all inbound and outbound email is stored by the Sensical.net Mail Scanner and are visible and searchable by the customer via the web-based control panel. Email bodies are not stored (unless the email is quarantined and then only for 31 days).
- Message Archiving: In addition to the above storage, if the customer chooses the archiving option, then the full contents of all inbound and outbound email is stored by the Sensical.net Mail Scanner and are visible and searchable by the customer. Archived inbound and outbound emails can be released to the original recipient or to other recipients by the customer.
